Overview
The CTE Pathway Progress Report provides districts with a comprehensive view of student participation and completion within California Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways. Using CALPADS course completion data, the report identifies students as Participants, Concentrators, or Completers based on completed coursework and displays aggregated counts by Industry Sector and Pathway.
An accompanying dashboard widget allows districts to monitor pathway progress, validate student coding, and track participation and completion trends across CTE programs.
Data Source
The report uses:
- CALPADS student course completion records
- California CTE Valid Codes reference file
The following tabs from the Valid Codes file are used to determine pathway assignments and course classifications:
- CTE Pathway – CTE Industry Sector
- Course Group Master Combos
- CTE Pathway – CTE Subpathways
Only records where Last Academic Year Effective is either:
- N/A, or
- The current academic year
are included in the pathway mapping process.
Available Filters
In addition to all standard student and report filters, the report includes:
- CTE Pathway
- Industry Sector
- Subpathway
These filters allow users to analyze participation and completion within specific CTE programs.
Pathway Mapping
Student course completions are mapped to CTE pathways using the California Valid Codes file.
Industry Sector Assignment
Pathways are grouped under the associated Industry Sector Name from the CTE Pathway – CTE Industry Sector tab.
Course Classification
The Course Group Master Combos tab is used to identify course types:
| Column | Description |
|---|---|
| E | CTE Pathway Code |
| F | CTE Subpathway Code |
| H | Concentrator Course |
| I | Capstone Course |
Student Status Determination
Students are evaluated within each pathway and assigned the highest status they have earned.
Completer
A student is identified as a Completer when they have successfully completed a designated Capstone Course.
Concentrator
A student is identified as a Concentrator when they have completed a designated Concentrator Course but have not completed a Capstone Course.
Participant
A student is identified as a Participant when they have completed introductory pathway coursework but have not completed either a Concentrator or Capstone Course.
Multiple Pathway Handling
Some students may be associated with a subpathway identified as Multiple Pathways.
When a student:
- Has a status of Participant, and
- Belongs to a subpathway of Multiple Pathways
the student will be reported under:
Multiple Industry Sectors
This ensures students are appropriately represented when pathway participation cannot yet be attributed to a single industry sector.
Report Output
The report summarizes student counts by Industry Sector and displays:
- Participant Count
- Concentrator Count
- Completer Count
This allows districts to quickly evaluate pathway engagement and progression across CTE programs.
Drilldown Functionality
Users can drill into report results to view additional detail at multiple levels:
Industry Sector
View all pathways within a selected industry sector.
Pathway
View student counts and status information for a specific pathway.
Student List
Review all students associated with the selected pathway or status category.
Individual Student
Access student-level details to verify course completions and pathway assignments.
Dashboard Widget
A companion CTE Pathway Progress Widget is available for district dashboards.
The widget provides a high-level summary of pathway participation and completion and can be used to:
- Monitor CTE pathway progress
- Validate student pathway coding
- Identify participation and completion trends
- Evaluate pathway growth across industry sectors
- Track progress toward concentrator and completer status
The widget reflects the same calculations and filtering options available in the full report, allowing users to move seamlessly from dashboard monitoring to detailed analysis.
Use Cases
Districts can use this report and widget to:
- Monitor student progress through CTE pathways
- Verify pathway coding accuracy
- Support Perkins and CTE program reviews
- Identify pathways with strong completion rates
- Detect students who may be approaching concentrator or completer status
- Analyze participation trends by industry sector and pathway
