CAASPP Performance Movement Analysis

Overview

The CAASPP Performance Movement Analysis report helps educators understand how student achievement levels change between two academic years. By comparing CAASPP results across years, the report identifies students who improved, maintained, or declined in performance and presents the results in an easy-to-read transition matrix.

Location: Assessment → CAASPP Performance Movement Analysis
Path: /assessment/caaspp-performance-movement

This report answers questions such as:

  • How many students moved from Developing to Proficient?
  • How many students remained at the same achievement level year over year?
  • How many students declined from Proficient to Developing?
  • Which groups of students demonstrated the most growth or decline?

The analysis uses CALPADS CAASPP assessment records and includes only students with valid CAASPP results in both selected comparison years.

Understanding the Transition Matrix

The report displays results as a transition matrix.

  • Rows represent the student’s achievement level in the earlier academic year.
  • Columns represent the student’s achievement level in the later academic year.
  • Each cell contains the number of students who moved from the row level to the column level.

For example:

Earlier YearLater YearMeaning
DevelopingProficientStudents improved from Developing to Proficient
ProficientProficientStudents maintained proficiency
AdvancedDevelopingStudents declined from Advanced to Developing

Achievement Levels

Achievement levels are displayed in the following order:

LevelDescription
AdvancedHighest performance band
ProficientMet grade-level standard
DevelopingApproaching standard
MinimalBelow standard
No ScoreNo valid achievement level available

Achievement levels 1–4 are mapped to:

  • Level 4 → Advanced
  • Level 3 → Proficient
  • Level 2 → Developing
  • Level 1 → Minimal

Any other value is classified as No Score.

Totals

The matrix includes:

  • Row Totals – students beginning at a particular achievement level.
  • Column Totals – students ending at a particular achievement level.
  • Grand Total – all students included in the comparison.

Only students with matching CAASPP records in both selected years are included.

Filters

The report automatically refreshes when filters change. No Submit button is required.

Required Filters

Academic Comparison Years

Select exactly two academic years.

  • The earlier year becomes the row axis.
  • The later year becomes the column axis.
  • If more than two years are selected, only the two most recently selected years are retained.
  • If only one year is selected, the report displays:

Must select 2 Academic Years to be compared in the filter.

Grade

Select one or more grade levels.

Grade selections affect the available school options.

School

Select one or more schools.

School and grade selections are linked and only valid combinations are available.
